As part of a nationwide crackdown on software piracy, Microsoft Corp. has sued a pair of Chicago computer retailers, alleging they sold pirated copies of its Windows operating system. Jason Sango of Forsythe says businesses are starting to realize how troublesome software licenses can be.

Financial reasons include preserving cash for other uses, creating predictable expenses, and keeping capital investments off the balance sheet. "A lot of times when a customer is buying capital equipment, they buy more than what they need because they don't want to have to go back to the CFO in another two years asking for another capital expenditure," Carcone says.
